I own both and can say that there is a big difference in AF speed (with the
EOS 3 being much faster). So, if you're going to use the camera for sports
or some other application where AF speed makes a big difference, go for the
'3'. However, the faster AF of the EOS 3 will not make a difference when
shooting street photography, general photojournalism, scenics, or the like.
If these latter are your aim, save yourself $500.

It occurs to me that if you're shooting sports and you're used to manual
focusing, then you should know that MF may still be an advantage. It's
awful easy to let the AF point slip from the action and blow a few
frames--whereas when manual focusing, that will not happen. Of course,
there are also times where manual focusing is extremely difficult. Just
know that no system is perfect.

One parting comment--ECF slows focusing down even on the EOS 3. When AF
speed is paramount, select a focus point ahead of time and then shoot when
your subject is in focus (hopefully at the defining moment!).
