Hi John,
as far as the older bodies go, the 630/620/650 range
have interchangeable focusing screens. Canon made 2
split image screens for them - the E-B is a horizontal
split, the E-L is a horizontal/vertical split. The
630 (and maybe the others - not sure) has 6.5% partial
metering.
Two problems though - getting the screens may be
difficult as these cameras have been out of production
for 8-9 years. The other is that they are definitely
not in the quiet class when it comes to wind / rewind
noise (not if you're used to an A2).
I believe the EOS 1/1n may have similar screens
available, someone else may be able to confirm this.
You're correct about the lack of a split image screen
for the A2.
