Julian,
I don't think this is the best comparison of an "L" series versus a consumer
grade zoom.  While you can see the differences in the web posting you site
and the TS-E clearly wins, no one has ever called the TS-E 24mm a
exceptionally sharp L series lens.  It is a specialty lens for getting
moderate sharpness and correct perspective.  I have one, and think it is
fantastic for its purpose, but if I want light weight and am not worried
about convergence, I'll throw my cheap Sigma 24mm 2.8 on my camera or in my
pocket and get much sharper images with a faster speed and autofocus to
boot.  IMHO, I think it would be best to compare lenses of similar cost and
purpose for sake of decision making.  It is an interesting comparison, none
the less.
