I could be the lens in the printing machine was
unsharp or out of focus... ;-)
It would be interesting to know what aperture the lens
was set to for the pictures that you saw. I find the
22-55 to be quite sharp at f8 (borne out by the
photodo MTF graphs) but marginal wide open.
Diffraction takes its toll at smaller apertures,
especially at the short end. Like I said before, if
you can live with the limitations of the lens (and use
in within its "sweet spot") its a bargain.
Certainly an APS negative needs to be enlarged more,
but I think grain (which is pretty close to invisible
in a 35mm 4x6 for most negative films these days)
would be more noticable in an enlargement than any
differences in lens sharpness.
