Hi Ken,
Not sure why you would need spot metering specifically for macro (I
shoot tons of macro under available light and use CW with compensation
for my best results).
Anyway, I often use an incident meter, most often in the studio, but it
also works extremely well for macro work, so long as you compensate for
the bellows factor.
Aside from incident metering, though, I rarely use my handheld for spot
metering, except to check specific tones on backgrounds, etc. in studio
work. If your camera does not have a spot mode, it is sometimes
valuable to use a spot meter outside if the scene is contrasty (you can
get an idea of contrast range, and place the important tones for useful
exposure on the film).
