I somehow doubt that JPEG/EXIF will become unreadable any time soon (and
I'm particularly unconcerned because I've written a JPEG encoder/decoder
and therefore know how simple they really are).

Actually, either/both. TIFF packbits is essentially a modified run length
encoding scheme, but LZW is also (optionally) available. In either case,
the compression performance is indeed highly scene-dependent. LZW really
isn't such a good idea by the way, unless you LIKE paying royalties to
Unisys...
