I just thought I would let you know that Canon had a
decent booth at Macworld in San Francisco this week.
Their main thrust was printers and flatbed scanners
but they also showed all their digital cameras including
the D30. It was the first time I saw it and I was
very impressed. Since I have an Elan IIe and my wife
has a 7e, almost everything about was familiar
although it was pretty heavy. The Canon software runs
on both the Mac and PC. I'm sure everyone has heard
and read all they can about this camera.

What really excited me at the show (besides the
G4 Titanium PowerBook) was the new film scanners
that Nikon is releasing. I had been trying to decide
between a Nikon Coolscan and a Polaroid 4000.

Nikon has basically combined the two and improved them.
They showed the Coolscan IV ED, Super Coolscan 4000 ED
and the Super Coolscan 8000 ED.

The Coolscan IV ED is 36 bit, 2900 dpi in 42 seconds,
USB and costs $895.

The Super Coolscan 4000 ED (the one I think I'll get)
is 42 bit, 4000 dpi in 38 seconds, bundled with a
FireWire card (although Macs 2 years old and less
already have FireWire built-in) for $1695.

The Super Coolscan 8000 ED has the same specs as the
4000 but can also scan medium format (up to 6x9),
16mm film, slide glass and electron microscope imagery.

All of the scanners are bundled with Nikon Scan 3.0,
Digital ICE3 and a full version of Genuine Fractals.
They should be shipping around March or April.

Even though I am an avid Canon user and supporter, I am
excited about this Nikon offering. Now I need to look
at decent color inkjet printers. ;-)
