Several references have recently been made about the red eye reduction function
built-in to many flash systems.
I am a bit skeptical. How can they work? The human pupil takes a fair amount of time
to react to a burst of light.
That is why we squint at night when our mates thoughtlessly turn the lights on to
answer a call of nature.

I just can't see how a brief burst of light, followed a few milliseconds later by
the exposing flash can be the slightest effective in reducing red eye. What am I
missing here?
