Based on the original post with 8-10' white ceiling and a family of four
(and assuming something in the 60-85mm range focal length, I think the 420EX
would be powerful enough to bounce. It's only a half-stop below the 550-EX.
One thing to be careful with on the large Lumiquest softbox is that it might
obstruct the AF assist light on the flash. The ProMax and UltraSoft seem to
be ok on the 380EX and 550EX, but I haven't used both on the 420EX yet, it's
too newly in my kit.
