What body are you using ?

On my Elan II and 1V the IS stays active as long as I hold the shutter down half-way. 
So my procedure is basically:

1.  Press shutter half-way to activate exposure, AF and IS
2.  Continue to hold shutter half-way (IS active) until the moment is right.
3.  Press shutter all the way and take picture.

If I release the shutter after only pressing it half-way the IS mechanism stays active 
for a second or two and then deactivates.
