I have one of the Mk I versions of the 1.8, and yesterday at a camera show I
saw close up for the first time the current 1.8, and I didn't even recognize
it as the same lens. It had no distance scale, and looked even cheaper than
the metal mount. I don't know that I would characterize the 1.8 as "much
noisier", but it does make more noise. I have both the 1.4 and 1.8, and find
I use the 1.8 as a quick and light carry around "only" lens on my IX or Elan
IIe bodies when I want to travel light.

Out of curiousity, I tried both on an EOS 3, and the 1.4 AF seemed to be
quicker than on the other bodies, but I could tell no improvement in the
1.8.

If I settled on a 1.8 having seen both, I'd pay the premium for the Mk I
even though it would be used.
