Well, maybe it's more the tolerance of the people
judging the lens then the tolarance of Canon's QC. For
some people an image is sharp whereas for others the
exactly same image is unacceptable. This is even more
true if you compare images/projections of different
sizes & distances (-> magnification), different
processing, different paper/projection walls, etc.
Personally, I do not think one should put much weight
on somebody's opinion especially about the optical
quality of a single. It makes more sense to listen to
comparisons of different lenses. But even then, some
people might say two particular lenses are almost of
the same quality while another person might say there
is a huge difference. I am not saying one should not
listen to comments from others at all but one has to
be aware that different people have very different
standards.
