I really like the Lithium-ion (LiOn) batteries that
Canon and Sony (NP-550F) use in their products because
they charge quickly and have a whole bunch of current
capacity (ampere-hours, battery life). They are
expensive at $60 or so a pop.

Though I like AA Nickel metal-hydride (NiMH) and
Nickel-cadnium (Ni-Cad) cells, though they have high
current capacity they tend to self-discharge really
rapidly. That is, once charged and removed from their
charger, they will lose charge if just left to sit.
LiON batts hold their charge for MONTHS by comparison.

I know the cell voltages of LiOn and most AA
formulations are different, but wouldn't it be nice
(here it comes!) if Canon offered battery packs that
let you use the LiOn cells with flash units, film
cameras and motor drives? A transistorized
high-voltage pack that could be used with the 550ex
would be really cool. I'd buy them, another charger,
and a few more of these really expensive batteries
just to cut down on the number of AA's rolling around
at the bottom of my bag.
