Do you mean the Photosmart?  I had the original
version of that scanner, and was actually pretty
impressed.  It certainly wasn't the equal of a $1500
or better scanner, but it was pretty darn good.

The biggest drawback was the software, which made it
difficult to get the best possible adjustments out of
the scanner.

The new version is USB, rather than SCSI, and I
understand it to be slower.  But I think the
software's been improved.  And, for $40, you can get
VueScan software off the web.  In spite of a rather
poor user interface, it's actually a very powerful
tool.

I'm afraid I can't compare the HP scanner to any other
low-end models, however.  HTH,
