        I'd be tempted to suggest the 50 1.8 - It is a relatively cheap way to prove
        that the lens is the source of your problems and also a useful lens to have
        available.

        The more correct answer is probably to say it depends on your shooting style
        and requirements. For children you are probably working fast and don't have
        time to use a tripod so a fast lens is handy (it is also good for getting some
        background in flash pictures). I got the 28-135 in preference to the 28-105
        because when you can't use a tripod it can mean the difference between getting
        the shot and getting a useless blur but it isn't as useful in action 
situations.
