Of course it could be in some circumstances; however, with the EOS 3, 1v (and
7?) you can control flash output from the body, by applying flash compensation
separate from exposure compensation. Nonetheless . . .

Budget allowing, I'd be inclined to spring for the 550EX first and then add a
420EX later to serve as a slave, etc.
