My guess would be that it was farther out (and past the sprocket holes) the
first time. On my EOS 5 and Elan II, I've found that they reload perfectly,
subject to operator error. Unlike one other poster though, I can't go from the
Elan to the 5 without skipping a frame. There is an offset of one
perferation. Of course, it's OK going from the 5 to the Elan.
I checked this with an old roll of print film when the cameras were new. I got
it developed, but not printed or cut, to see just what was happening when
re-loading film.
I have found that if you open the back of the camera, with film already loaded,
and then shut it again (don't try this at home!), the camera will wind ahead 2
or 3 frames, and the counter resets to 1. It goes far enough ahead that the
next frame will not be fogged. Any previously shot frames will not be so
lucky. (Although, they weren't all totally ruined either.)
If you really what to use those two wasted frames at the beginning of each
roll, you could try splicing some more leader onto the leader. It won't work
for rolls of 36, since the camera will rewind after 36 frames anyway. Maybe
you should just buy that Agfa film that gives you three extra frames for
"free".
