This is an almost religious question :-) Some folks swear on using UV
Filters for protection, others never use them.

I always use the hood. The hood protects my lens - I happen to belong to
the third group of photographers who use an UV filter only when its
protection is really needed, e.g. in dusty and windy environments or at
the beach. The hood doesn't hurt - unlike a filter under certain
conditions.
Using the hood is not a must, though. Its flare protection can also be
replaced by shading the lens with your hand. The hood is round BTW, not
of the petal shaped type.
