I too use the hood all the time and filter seldom.  The hood stays on
in the bag too:  to keep the lens cap in place.  That is the one
aspect of lenses where marking the front element is most likely:  in
the bag.  Pity the caps are not a more secure fit, or even transparent
;o)

I've never had a shot ruined on that lens by using the hood.
