No offense please, but I think you're looking at the
wrong end first. Both lenses are capable of making
very good images (though neither as good as, say, the
300 2.8).
The more important issue, I think, is whether a fixed
focal length lens or a zoom better meets the
requiremtns of your subjet matter. For birds and
animals it might not matter much, but for races I'd
think the added versatility of the zoom might be
important. I know that for other sports, like soccer,
where the distance to the action keeps changing, a
zoom is a lifesaver for me.
If you need the added flexibility of the zoom, then go
for it. If not, the 300 + TC is lighter and easier to
use (IMHO).
