Neither have I used it but my friend has and as I recall it did not
work very well for birds in flight (birds coming to nest). Don't
remember the reason exactly but I quess the following reasons
(some have been already mentioned by others) might be true:

- Only triggers the shutter release (fires the whole film if in
  continuous and if number of frames not limited). In my opinion
  it should fire only as long as in focus.
- Eats batteries (shutter release needs to be kept down).
- The shutter lag time may be still too long (bird gets out of focus).

But as I said, no first hand experience.

With external "light beam" triggers you could have some advance (is
this a right English word?) to compensate the shutter release lag.
