Thanks for everyone's input on my question. The responses have been very
helpful. The reason I'm going with Canon is because of prices! I'd like to
get the IS version, but I just can't afford it. Although I have seen the
600mm f/4 IS go for $5500 and $6750, it happens rarely and you have to be
quick to call.

>From my reasearch prices are below:

Comparing apples to apples would look something like:
USED Nikon AFS........USED Canon USM (NON IS)
lenses
300mm f/2.8.... $3900......$2500
400mm f/2.8.....$6900......$3000-3500
500mm f/4.......$5900......$2500-3000 (Old USM Canon only
has f/4.5 aperture)
600mm f/4.......$7900......$4000-5000

You can go to www.photo-fax.com and see that my used
Canon prices are quite accurate. This is not an
auction site, but a commissioned based site. where
buyers list the selling price they want for their gear
and photo-fax acts as an escrow agent. Very good site
and very secure service. Or look at old ebay auctions. I posted my price
question, just to be sure my research was fairly accurate.

Canon is a huge savings comparing apples to apples
(USM to AFS) Comparing USM IS to AFS is not a direct
comparison to me. But even if you did it seems that
the prices are about the same between the two rivals,
but Canon is giving you more features (IS) for your
$$$.

I have posted used prices because I think it
is ridiculous to buy a new lens and then have it's
value depreciate $500 the minute one opens the box. If you are a pro that
can make up the $500 in a couple of months that's a different story.

I'll still keep my Nikon stuff for the same reason, price! Besides I can
always use an Nikon to EOS lens mount adapter to put them on a canon body.
My next dilema EOS3 or EOS 1v?

Peace, Rolland
