Hi Dan,
The groove for the hood-retaining ring is only about 1 mm
in width. Look for a *tiny* screw set into the barrel,
near the words "LENS MADE IN JAPAN". The groove is the
same width as that screw.

P.S. Original versions of Canon cameras and lenses do not seem
to have a version number (e.g. I) according to Canon practice.
Only revised models have the version numbers in roman numerals
(II, III, IV, V). E.g.
Elan, Elan II
EF 28-105, EF 28-105 II
EF 28-80, EF 28-80 IV, EF 28-80 V
The exception seems to be Kiss / New Kiss / Kiss III which
refer to Rebel XS / Rebel G / Rebel 2000 in the Americas.
