Julian,

The ES-62 hood fits both the 50 1.8 Mrk 1&2. The adapter ring screws
into the filter threads, then you clip the flimsy hood to the ring. So
if you have the hood installed and you want to install a filter, off
comes the hood with the adapter ring and on goes the filter and all back
together. And I use a step down ring so I can use my 58mm filters!!!!
This just adds more fun to procedure!! This hood works but is a ass
backwards design!!!!!!!!! (how many more !!!'s can I use??!!)My 50 1.8
Mrk1 does not have this "grove" you mention. I just bought my hood 2
months ago, and it fits the Mrk 1 version just fine.

Hi Tom,

To which version of the 50/1.8 are you referring?

The ES-62 and adapter ring are accessories for the EF 50mm f/1.8 II
This lens has a shallow ridge on the barrel, but there is no place
to clip a hood.

By contrast, the previous model EF 50mm f/1.8 does indeed have a
groove on the front edge for the clip-on hood ES-65.

The ES-65 and ES-65 II do not have rayon anti-reflective flocking.
Apparently, the ES-65 III (the hood for the TS-E 90mm f/2.8) has
the anti-reflective flocking.
