To the best of my recollection, Dr. Prior's postings themselves
have been non-commercial and ontopic, so it's just the signature
that you object to. This is not "spam". Provided that it's no
longer than four lines and is attached to a message of at least
marginal value, I see nothing to complain about.
The not-to-exceed-four-lines personal signature at the end of an
email or newsgroup posting is a longstanding Usenet and Internet
tradition. People have used this space for identification, for
quotes, for various ruminations ranging from dumb to amusing
and banal to profound. And yes, people have used it for self-
promotion of various sorts. Sometimes, people reveal things
about themselves that they don't actually intend, and I think
that this is one of those cases.
