I don't necessarily agree with this advice. I have a 300 f/4 L. If I
use a 1.4X on it I get a 420 f/5.6. The 2X gives me a 600 f/8.
Oh, I forgot to mention that I have an EOS-5. Autofocus doesn't work
past f/5.6. The 2X would mean I lose AF. So I am going to buy a 1.4X
and keep AF.
