Hi Bob,

It seems that Canon has already done so :-)  Maximum magnification
using the 100-400 IS at 400mm with the 500D is greater than 1:1!

I have used a 72mm +2 diopter (Canon 500D) on the 28-135 IS and
100-400 IS only a few times. I shot handheld, but also used flash
(so it might not count). Centre sharpness and colour was very good,
but the subjects in my pictures were not parallel to the film plane,
and did not cover the full frame, so I could not assess edge detail.

Now I have to find the time to shoot more macro subjects...
