Re: Mikael's query regarding Sigma Lenses.
My lens line up includes the 20-35 f3.5/4.5, 28-105 f3.5/4.5, 70-200 f2.8
and the Sigma 170-500 f5-6.3. I recently purchase the EOS 1V and it doesn't
work with the Sigma lens. I heard about this before I bought the camera, so
I wasn't entirely surprised. (I also have an EOS 5, which works fine with
the Sigma.)
The problem is that I have had my Sigma lens since 1996. At that time the B
series EOS cameras were being manufactured. Since then, the new A series
cameras have been introduced and that is where the problem with the older
non-Canon lenses surfaced. (I first heard about it when the EOS 3 was
released.) I believe that the newer non-Canon lenses have been altered and
work with the new A series cameras. In the case of the 70-210 f2.8 Sigma
lens, the first thing to find out is when was it manufactured. The next
step is to put it on the camera and see if it works. In the case of my EOS
1V, when I tried it with my 170-500, the shutter speed and aperture figures
in the window on the top plate flickered and when I pressed the shutter
button, the mirror stopped in the raised position. This problem cleared
itself, when I removed the lens and switched the camera off and on again.
The camera doesn't jam in manual exposure mode, but I don't get any
shutter/aperture read-outs in the viewfinder, so it isn't much good.
I only purchased my IV about two weeks ago. I contacted the local Sigma
agents about the problem (I live in South Africa) and they in turn contacted
the factory in Japan. A new electronic chip is being sent, for installation
in my lens. It is apparently not a major problem to change. In the case of
lenses still within their warranty period, I believe that the agents will do
the necessary modification at no cost. Unfortunately, in my case, the lens
is now nearly 5 years old, so it will be for my account.
I will report back later, when the new chip has been installed.
