Sorry I have not gotten back on this. Much has been going on in my life and
photography unfortunately has not been on of them.
I have to tell you though that there are many manufacturers that could learn
a few things from this New Tamron 28-200. It is a very well built lens. For
non-USM it focuses very fast and sure on my EOS-3. Inside in low light I
always have my 550EX on and it throws out its red light pattern and it still
focuses very fast and sure. Some people complain about a lot of lenses
hunting for focus in low light. DUH! The sensors in our camera need light to
focus as do our eyes. Light levels drop and focus gets difficult with both
our eyes and our cameras. An on camera flash fixes the problem. One should
only complain if the light levels are normal and a lens looses focus and
hunts. The auto focus is also quite. The only real complaint some could have
is that the manual focusing ring spins during autofocus. It does not bother
me at all.
O.K. auto focus is swift, so what else can I tell you so far? Build
quality is great for a lens in this price range. Many zooms Canon included,
suffer from barrel wobble at full extension. I can honestly say the this
Tamron does not suffer from this at all! An incredible performance for such
a long zoom range.
Its fit and finish are excellent, its autofocus is very nice, the size
and weight is perfect (IMHO) and its price is sweet!
Optical quality seems very good too. I have only taken snapshots of the
family with it so far but and they have been more than adequate. I really
LOVE how close this lens focuses! I will when time permits, give this lens a
good workout in a real lens test. I will let you know.
So far I would not hesitate to say that this lens is the finest 28-200
for the money. The Canon USM does not have the same solid feel to it and it
has a terrible manual focusing ring. It looks plasticky and feels plasticky
too. Its cost is unreal! Want your cake and icing? Look no further.
