Andrew:

In addition to Gary's info about Sigma compatibility with the EOS 7(e), I've
noted generally that Sigma lenses are compatible with all EOS bodies...with
the caveat of..."after a while". Sigma seems not to have any agreement with
Canon, or visa-versa, that allows them to know before hand how their lenses
will interface with the most current camera body. As a result, Sigma seems
(and I think also the other 3rd party lens makers except perhaps Tamron) to
play a game of reverse-engineering whenever a new EOS body is introduced.
For instance, I had an EOS 5 with a Sigma lens that worked fine. When I got
a new EOS 3 shortly after they came out, that lens wouldn't work with it.
When the 1v came out, same problem; the lenses that Sigma had re-chipped to
accommodate the EOS 3, would now not work (I understand--no firsthand
experience) with the 1v. And now they are playing catch-up with the EOS
7(e). Same thing with a used Tokina lens I bought some time ago--it worked
fine on the seller's A2e but sure didn't on my EOS 3.

So, it's probably safe to say that when a new EOS model comes out, your
chances of buying a 3rd party lens that will not be compatible are pretty
good. The other part though is that Sigma has been very good about
re-chipping your lens so that it will work with your new EOS body. The same
goes for service from THK and Tokinas.
