I'm sure someone will answer from experience, but the way I read it,
no. It says for the ST-E2 that the forward field of effectiveness
covers an arc 40 degrees wide in the horizontal plane and 30 degrees
wide in the vertical, so that sounds to me like it rules out having a
flash parallel to the *controller.* I haven't *yet* found the same
angular specs for when using the 550EX as the controller, but I
suspect it's similar.
