Here are some feedback from experience:

1.  In not too large of an indoor environment, the IR control signals will
bounce around enough that I have yet to have problems from the "theoretical"
angular limits specified for the ST-E2.

2.  There is a really easy way to test if the signal from the ST-E2 is
getting to the flash (it's only one-way simplex transmission), at least with
camera and the flash that have modeling light capability.  Just depress the
modeling light switch on the camera to see if the flash lights up
accordingly, if it does you are OK.
