Hi Julian,
When I checked this out for you a while ago with my
EOS 30, I noted that the 550EX pattern covered all 7
sensors, and I *think* (in fact I'm pretty sure) that
it worked on the upper and lower points with both
420EX and 550EX. I was using ECF for the testing.
If I get a chance tonight (Oz time) I'll check again.
Thinking about it, does the AF assist light come on
with one of the other 5 AF points allowing you to
(using ECF) shift the active focus point to one of the
other 2 AF points while the AF assist light is on. I
think this *may* have been what I did.
