I've not used any of the other items you list, so I
won't comment on them. But I agree with your choice
of this lens. There's a lot of commonly held belief
here in internet land that just doesn't hold up to the
light of hard fact. The 100-300 USM lens is better
made, and has that nice ring USM, so I suspect there's
a lot of feeling that it SHOULD be a much better lens.
(There may be a bit of self deception going on here,
too). But test reports don't really support that.

I've owned the 75-300 IS, and got very good results
with it. Is it as good as a 70-200 L? Of course not.
But I think it's every bit as good as the 100-300
USM, which I've also owned, and the IS does an amazing
job of improving the quality of hand held images,
especially at the long end.

There are only a few things I didn't like about it,
and most of them apply to other *relatively*
inexpensive lenses:

The front element rotates when focusing, a pain if you
use a polarizing filter a lot. This is also true of
the 75-300 non IS, but NOT true of the 100-300.

Build quality isn't L grade by any means, but it's
adequate for amateur use.

It's heavy, compared to the non-IS lenses.

It's a bit slow (but so are the other lenses in its
class).
