Hi Russell,

As you've obviously deduced the M button allows the
command dial to change the aperture settings on the
lens.  If you don't press the the M button rotating
the command dial changes the shutter speed.

>From memory: The "OP" stands for OPen and the "CL"
stands for CLose.  This is the manual metering modes
way of telling you how to set the shutter / aperture
combo. Instead of a scale indicating under and over
exposure (as used in newer bodies), it tells you to
"OPen" up or to "CLose" the lens aperture to get the
correct exposure. The "oo" is when it considers
exposure correct (just don't ask me what it stands
for!).  

Manual metering ease of use is not one of the
strongest points of the 6x0 series cameras.
