I've shot news one way or another for better than 20 years stills and video,
as a staffer and as a freelancer, and I've only once had a "press pass". No
one ever asked to see it!

Press credentials that really mean something are usually issued by the
organizers of the event, whatever it is. If you have the organization that
you're shooting for contact the organizers of the event, they can have
credentials waiting for you. Sometimes a fax on letterhead is required.
