Hi Tom,
Welcome to the List. The service centre has had the opportunity to
examine your camera, and therefore is in an excellent position to offer
correct advice.
Contrary to popular opinion, a flashing "BC" indicator does not
mean "Buy Canon" :-) "BC" can mean "battery check", or "camera
malfunction" or "lens malfunction" or any combination of the above.
If your new 75-300 USM lens is the cause, then removing it and
afterwards resetting your camera (by taking out and replacing the
batteries), should fix the "BC" message. If your old 35-80 lens
then works, it confirms that your 75-300 is at fault.
When cleaning the contacts on the lens and the camera does not fix
the BC problem, then a factory repair of the Iris diaphragm or
focussing motor might be necessary.
The gold plated contacts can be cleaned *gently* with a plastic
pencil eraser. This technique should be quite familiar to you
as an Electrical Engineer :-)
