Last message from you maybe <g>

After hearing all the different opinions, I decided that the
zoom was the better deal for me. So, yesterday I finally
bought it after a wait of nearly a year (not helped by
a Christmas Bonus that didn't eventuate and turned into
a "Thank you staff" comment in the minutes of the Annual
General Meeting of my employer :-( )

HOORAY!

Okay, I'm a little excited. It's the best (well, in theory for
me so far) and most expensive lens I own, with L's being mostly a
loooong way out of my budget ("Never say never!" though, right
folks?). The angle-of-view compared to the 28 part of my 28-80
3.5-5.6 USM IV is stunning. Fun!

BTW, the zoom swayed me for it's convenience of being able
to zoom to a relatively 'normal' focal length, meaning I
*can* get away, with restriction of course, with carrying
my camera around with just this lens and nothing else.
(Note, this is just to me though - I don't put this as an
'argument' for the lens. I just like carrying a camera and
lens only, with unexposed film in one pocket of my cargo shorts,
and exposed in the other).

Thanks to the EOS list, I had all the info available to me;
example photos, advice on using it, strengths and weaknesses,
comparisons with other lenses (incl. the 17-35 as well
as the 20 2.8).

Your individual postings were much appreciated by me
lurking in the background. Now where were you all when I
bought the 50E and let them sell me the 28-80 instead
of the 28-135 IS <vbg>

Cheers
Marc
