Sorry to bother the list with all my recent whines. So, here's another :-) I just got my canon ef 28-90/4-5.6 back (an hour ago) from canon service center in Illinois. After only two months, you could hear clicking noises when turning the zoom-ring right and left around 80mm. But that's not what's bothering me the most. My girlfriend accidentally tried to focus an object closer than the lens minimum focus distance (0.38m/1.3ft). The object was 3 inches far from the lens. Of course, focus cannot be achieved. That's when the problem kicks in -- the zoom-ring is stuck (if the problem doesn't occur, try pressing the shutter halfway a couple of times and keep the lens 3 inches from the object). You can't move it right/left. It's not always completely stuck, sometimes the zoom-ring is just very hard to turn. You can force it, but it might just break the lens. Out of curiosity, I tried several canon ef lens on Ritz camera (28-90/4-5.6 and 24-85/3.5-4.5), Bestbuy (28-90/4-5.6 and 28-80/3.5-5.6), and my own 28-70/2.8L . All 28-90 I tried have the same problem, but none of canon other lenses have this problem. The test was done with my Elan 7e and the stores' Elan 7e and RebeL2000. I know it's stupid to focus below the min. distance, but why does 28-90 have the problem and other lens don't? Also, There is one other problem that does not always occur. If the 28-90 lens is used normally (1.3ft to infinity) and can't get focus, the zoom-ring might get heavier than it used to be. Especially at 28mm and 90mm. I think this is the one that caused my 28-90 clicking noise around 80mm. I might not realize that the barrel was getting heavier and kept turning it left and right. If both problems above happen to you, try to get the camera to focus on different object. Once focus is achieved, the zoom-ring can be turned easily (lightly). Canon service center fixes the clicking noises. They did a very poor job. You know there are two small holes on the rim of the lens. It seems like Canon forcefully drill/stick something into them. The result is very visible and it leaves very beautiful scratches all over the lens rim. Luckily, there is none on the lens. Sorry for such a long rant :) I just thought I need to inform other users of these problems.
