: Way off-topic question.
: To those who have the simple www.you-name.com URL, did you all register
the
: domain names with a hosting company and are paying $XXX per year to hold
: this unique domain URL to IP address link?
I registered my domain through register.com. Then I use a free webspace
service called Webprovider.com . Register.com will let you use
webprovider.com's dns server. It's a pretty straight up process, both sites
will help you to do it. The drawback is you'll see a floating banner just
like geocities or tripod. To get rid of it, you have to pay circa $4/mo.
A friend bought his domain from joker.com for $11(+7 for the dns), and
mirror the dns to his own machine at home. It saves a great deal of money,
but slow if you don't have a fast connection.
About a year ago, I've seen many hosting companies offer a free domain
registration (that saves you the $75 InterNIC cost, not just free processing
fee) if you use their webservices for $$$/period of time. Sometimes it's a
year or at least 1-3 months. Sorry I can't give you any names because I've
checked too many webhosting and can't remember them all.
An extensive research will save you a great deal of money. Pay attention to
special offers. I got lower price for Cihost.com through sites like
webhostlist.com (bought by Cnet) rather than if I applied directly from
Cihost.
Hope this helps,
Jansen.
