Hi Craig
I have the same camera and, like you, I think the date back is
almost always useless. I only tried once to see if it is working, and I
found that if the place on the negative where the date will be imprinted is
very bright, the date becomes invisible. If it is your case, try to take a
picture of a dark subject on the edge of the photo.
If you have your camera for a long time, verify if the date back
battery isn't weak. To show date on the camera back probably needs less
energy to light the date on the negative. Use a voltage meter to see if the
baterry is near 3V.
