You might look into the Tamron 90mm Macro lens - it has a sterling
reputation, and I think you can get it new for under $500.  Also, the
older version of the Canon 100mm Macro without USM sells in this
range.  Since I would think that most macro work would be manual focus
anyway, this might not be an issue, unless you wanted it to double as
a portrait lens a lot.  Even then, MF is a perfectly reasonable
option.
