I'm sure I read somwhere (actually, I think it was
here - in Arthur Morris' "Birds as Art" Bulletin) 
that the *new* Canon EF extenders  can be stacked 
without an extension tube (I think it was the 2X 
that had the altering to recess it's rear element).
This information was received by Arthur Morris from
