Actually the new Canon 2x EF Extender II has been redesigned (resulting in
a slightly larger diameter) and now can mate directly with either the older
1.4x or new 1.4x EF Extender II. The 1.4x goes on the camera body, then the
2x and then the lens. With the older 2x you had to use a 12mm Extension
Tube in between the extenders. Canon is not promoting using the two in
combination but admits it can be done. I am waiting for some slides to
return from processing in which I combined the new 1.4x and new 2x
extenders with the 600 IS. Artie Morris, the bird photographer, has used
the combination of the older extenders successfully with a 600mm.
