The camera obviously uses the metering mode you set for
ambient metering.

No, because when you have AF-start assigned to the
rear *-button, FEL is obliviated.

Only with one of the two off center AF sensors
selected and only with AF on the trigger.
No chance with AF on the rear *-button.
(where it belongs because of the very poor AF)
