Hi Chris,

Sorry, I was a bit unclear. I meant that the lens (Canon or
off-brand) has to be electronically compatible with the Canon
autofocus lens mount (EF mount). This usually means that the
lens was capable of autofocus operation, but it was switched
to manual focus operation. The focus assist should work.

On the other hand, it is possible to use a manual focus
lens or a telescope with an adapter that physically fits
the lens mount on your EOS camera. The focus assist
does not work.
