I'll address this from the other end.  I have the
70-200 2.8, and there are a number of situations in
which I'd really miss the extra stop.  I shoot quite a
bit of youth sports.  Outdoors, I use the lens with a
2x.  I'd miss the extra stop if I had f * as my max
aperture.

And indoors (basketball, mostly), the 2.8 makes AF
faster and more sure (at least on my 3) and lets me
get a reasonable shutter speed wide open, or with
minimal fill flash.
