Ken:

The hood is important for this lens as zooms tend to flare a little more
than a fixed focal length.  I ordered the EW-78B II right after I got the
28-135, I think it was about $25-$28, which is not bad for a Canon OEM lens
hood when you consider my nearly $40 outlay for an extra hood for the 28-70
(which I use on my 70-200 because that hood is used on the 100-400...OK, a
little idiosyncratic).  And with the varying focal lengths, a non-flower
petal shaped generic one probably wouldn't work out very well.
