This is longish but might interest at least the EOS50(E) owners.
Maybe this (underexpose) belongs on the "no-no" subject list
like the "is 300/4L better than 300/4L IS" but here I won't
ask anything... I just tell what I have noticed myself.
About two years ago I switched from FD-line to EOS and noticed
that many of my pictures were slightly underexposed. Actually it
all started a bit earlier when I "re-started" photography more
seriously (and bought also a T90). I thought it was just lack
of practice but when I now afterwards think about it the service -
which checked the T90 after the purchase - told it is underexposing
"slightly but it may be just good for slide film"...
My first EOS body was 50E and the underexposing still existed
after switching to EOS. I still believed it is only my own fault.
When I got EOS 3 about one year ago I realized the existence of
the underexpose "problem" and adjusted myself mentally so that I started to
use darker part of the subject to lock the AE (that's
how I work) which removed the problem.
Early this year I sent the EOS-3 to service and they told that it
is underexposing about 0.5 stops. Now it is adjusted and I had
hard (but luckily short) time adjusting myself again for that
change.
I haven't used the EOS 50E lately very much but to be sure I took
some test slides and noticed the 50E slides were darker than the
adjusted EOS 3 frames (same lens, same position, same roll of film).
When I sent the 50E to service I just asked them to check and
adjust the functions (shutter speeds, exposure, etc.) and it came
from service with a note "exposure adjusted".
The test slides (again on the same roll) after both cameras were
back from service look similar, so actually BOTH cameras (EOS 3 and
EOS 50E) were originally underexposing.
I also remember someone saying that Canon might in general adjust
(have adjusted?) the exposure "differently" which might explain
some of the story but this is just my own speculation.
I remember someone (Hugo?) telling his early EOS-3 is exposing the
same way as 50E...
Any comments?
Vesa
