I was curious about how well macro lenses work in traditional shooting.
Specifically, I was thinking of portrait lenses. The choices include the
100/2 and the 100/2.8 Macro. I was thinking that a macro may be more
flexible because of the closer focusing ability and, of course, the macro
capability. But how does the macro lens perform for portaits or other
telephoto jobs?

It would be very sharp as a portrait lens. Understand a macro lens is
designed to photograph
flat objects with even sharpness out to the corners. Normal lenses (non
macro designs) are
designed to photograph 3D objects. If you do limited macro work you might
want to consider
a 135mm lens with a ext tube. If you do less portrais and more macro, then a
macro lens with
a soft filter would work fine. My favorite macro is the Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX
lens.
IMO, it sharper and less expensive than the Canon 100mm F2.8.
